Keep disposable diapers somewhere cool, dry and out of direct sun, and leave them in their original packaging until you need them. In a Canadian home that means a closet shelf or a dresser rather than a damp basement corner or an unheated garage. Here is how to handle each space, seal open packs and organize by size.
What diapers need: cool, dry and out of the sun
A disposable diaper is a layered product: a soft top sheet, an absorbent core, a waterproof outer layer, elastic at the waist and legs, and tapes or stretchy side panels. Dampness, strong heat and strong smells can all affect a product built like that, so the goal is a steady, room-temperature spot away from windows and heat sources.
Spots that tend to work well:
- A closet shelf or the top shelf of a linen cupboard
- A dresser drawer or a lidded under-bed bin in a bedroom or nursery
- A hall cupboard or pantry that stays at normal room temperature
Skip shelves right above a baseboard heater, radiator or furnace vent, and skip sunny windowsills where a pack sits in the afternoon light.
Basements, garages and humidity
Bulk packs often end up in the basement or garage because that is where the space is. Those are also the places where Canadian weather causes trouble.
Basements
Spring melt, summer humidity and concrete floors can leave a basement damp even when it looks dry. Moisture can reach a pack through the plastic seams or a small tear. If the basement is your only option, put diapers on a shelf rather than the floor, away from exterior walls and the laundry area, and inside a lidded bin. If the air smells musty, treat that as a sign the space is too damp for diapers.
Unheated garages
A garage can swing from deep freeze in January to hot in July. Big temperature swings can cause condensation on plastic packaging, and garages also bring pests, exhaust, paint and fuel smells. Absorbent materials can pick up odours from their surroundings. If you have no other room, use a bin with a tight lid, and bring a pack inside ahead of time so it settles to room temperature before you open it.
Attics and sunny rooms
Summer attics get very hot, and heat can affect elastic and the adhesive on tapes. Keep packs out of attics, out of car trunks parked in the sun and out of rooms with big south-facing windows.
Keep them in the original packaging
The pack is doing real work. It keeps dust off and helps keep damp air out, and it carries the size, the weight range, the count and any date or lot information the maker printed. Once diapers are loose in a bin, you lose all of that.
Leave packs sealed until you need them. If the plastic gets torn in a move, tape the tear shut or slide the whole pack into a lidded bin or a large zip-top bag.
Open packs: sealing out dust and odours
Once a pack is open, a few habits keep the remaining diapers clean:
- Fold the open end down and close it with a clip or a strong elastic band.
- Or slide the open pack into a lidded bin with the printed size facing out, so it is still easy to read.
- Keep it away from strong scents such as laundry detergent, candles and air fresheners, which diapers can pick up.
Open a new pack only when the last one is empty, so you are never working through several half-used packs.
Organizing by size so nothing gets missed
Babies grow at their own pace, and a shelf with mixed sizes is how the wrong size ends up at the changing table at 3 a.m. A simple system helps:
- Give each size its own bin or shelf, and mark it with a coloured tag or sticky note.
- Put the size you are using now at the front and the next size up at the back.
- Inside a size, use the oldest pack first.
- When your baby is close to the top of the weight range on the pack, check the next size in the diaper sizing guide before you open another large pack.
- Move outgrown, unopened packs out of your main storage so they are not opened by mistake. You can pass them to a friend, or ask a local community group whether they accept unopened packs.
Before a bulk order, compare the pack counts in the baby diapers and training pants collection with the shelf or bin space you have.
Storing diapers at the change station
Keep only a day or two of diapers at the change station and refill from your main storage. Everything you need should be within arm's reach so you never step away from your baby, and one hand should stay on your baby during every change.
A few ways to set it up: an open basket on a shelf, a caddy with dividers for diapers, wipes and spare clothes, or an organizer that hangs on the back of a door. In the diaper storage and organizers collection, one option is the KiddyCare Diaper Caddy with 4 Dividers, Large, Tan, and another is the Vesta Baby Over-the-Door Nursery Organizer with Clear Pockets.

Common questions
Can I keep diapers in the garage?
It depends on the garage. An unheated, uninsulated one swings between freezing and hot and can be damp, so a closet or dresser is the safer choice. If the garage is your only space, use a lidded bin on a shelf, off the floor, and bring packs inside before opening them.
Can I store diapers in the bathroom?
It is better not to keep your supply there. Steam from showers and baths makes a bathroom a poor spot for anything absorbent. If you change your baby in the bathroom, carry in what you need for that change.
How long can stored diapers sit on the shelf?
Check the pack for any date or lot information from the maker, and contact the maker if you are unsure. If a stored pack smells musty, feels damp or looks damaged, do not use it. If your baby's skin looks irritated after any diaper, check with a doctor, nurse or pharmacist.
