Travel wipe cases: how to choose, fill and refill one

A travel wipe case lets you carry a small stack of wipes in your diaper bag instead of a bulky pack. It earns its place when you fill it just before you leave and keep the lid shut. This guide covers the types of case, how many wipes to carry, how to fill one so the wipes stay moist and how to keep it clean.

Travel case vs small travel pack

There are two ways to carry wipes light. A small travel pack is a sealed pack made for bags: you take it as it comes, use it up and replace it. A refillable case is a container you fill from a larger pack and top up as you go.

  • Small travel pack. There is nothing to decant and nothing to clean. You buy a new one when it runs out.
  • Refillable case. You choose how many wipes to carry, and you can fill it from the bigger packs you already buy. It needs filling before you leave and cleaning afterwards.

You can also carry both: a case in the front pocket for the outing and a small sealed pack at the bottom of the bag as a back-up.

Hard cases, soft pouches and stick-on lids

  • Hard case. It keeps its shape, so wipes are not crushed by a bottle in a full bag. It takes more room and does not squash flat. A snap or flip lid should close completely.
  • Soft pouch. It packs flat and slips into a coat or stroller pocket. Check that you can pull one wipe with one hand, and that the closure seals.
  • Stick-on lid. This is a reusable adhesive cover that you press over the opening of a pack of wipes. It only works while the adhesive is clean and dry, so check that it still sticks and replace it if it stops.

The FEBSNOW Portable Baby Wipes Dispenser, Multicolour Boho Patterns, 4 Pack is sold as a set of four portable dispensers, so you could keep one in the diaper bag, one in the stroller and so on. The Kopi Baby Portable Changing Pad with Wipes Pocket, Grey takes a different approach and builds a wipes pocket into a portable changing pad. The wipe warmers and dispensers collection has other dispensers to compare.

How many wipes to carry for a day out

There is no single right number, because it depends on your baby and your outing. Work it out instead:

  1. For a few days at home, count how many wipes you use in an ordinary change and in a messy one.
  2. Estimate how many changes the outing will need, and add one more than you expect.
  3. Add a few for spills, sticky hands and faces, which wipes get used for too.
  4. Compare your total with what the case holds, as shown on the product page.

If the case holds fewer than you need, carry a small sealed pack as well. A shorter outing needs fewer wipes, and a smaller stack has less to dry out.

Filling a case without drying out the wipes

The goal is to keep air away from the stack. These habits help:

  • Fill the case just before you leave, not days ahead.
  • Take wipes from a fresh or well-sealed pack, and close that pack again straight away.
  • Load the wipes flat, without crushing them. If the lid will not close, take a few out.
  • Position the first wipe the way the case's instructions show.
  • Press the lid shut until it clicks or seals, and check it.
  • If the top wipe is dry, throw it away.

If a case has sat unused for weeks, empty it, discard the old wipes and start fresh. Never put a used wipe back in the case.

Keeping the case clean

A travel case lives in a bag with bottles, snacks and toys, so it needs more cleaning than you might expect. Each time you empty it, wash or wipe it out the way the maker's care instructions allow, and shake crumbs and lint out of the hinge and the opening. Leave it open to air-dry fully, lid seal included, before you refill.

Look inside for dark spots before you load a new stack. If the seal is damaged or spots do not wash off, replace the case. Carry it in its own pocket, away from anything used.

Where to carry it

  • Choose a pocket you can open with one hand, and use the same pocket every time.
  • A stroller handle pouch works for walks. In winter, an inside coat pocket is kinder to damp wipes than a cold basket.
  • Avoid leaving the case in a car for long stretches in very hot or freezing weather.

Some diaper bag backpacks are listed with a changing pad or insulated pockets. Whichever bag you use, give the case one fixed pocket. Browse the diaper bags collection to compare bags, and the baby wipes collection for packs to fill from.

Cloth wipes on the go

Cloth wipes travel in two ways. You can carry dry cloths with a small bottle of water, or a washcloth that you wet at the change, or you can carry damp ones in a sealed container and use them within the outing. Either way, used wipes go straight into a wet bag, and they are washed at home as part of your usual laundry routine.

Many travel cases are sized for thin disposable wipes, so a thicker cloth wipe may not fit or pull through the opening. Check the product page before you rely on one. Clean your hands after the change before you touch the container.

Common questions

How long do wipes stay moist in a travel case?

It depends on the seal and on how often the case is opened, so there is no set time. Check the top wipe before each outing, and refill a case that has sat for days.

Do I need a case if I carry a small pack?

No. A case is for people who want a measured stack, a tidier bag or a way to use up bulk packs.

How often should I wash it?

Each time you empty it for a refill, and any time it looks dirty. Follow the maker's care instructions for what the case can handle.
