What is the difference between an insert, a booster and a liner?

An insert is the main absorbent layer, and a booster is an extra layer added when the insert alone is not enough. A liner is a thin layer next to the skin that eases clean-up and does not add capacity. Listings use these words loosely, so rely on the dimensions and layers.

See booster vs insert and liner vs insert.

Which insert material suits me?

  • Microfibre: absorbs and dries quickly.
  • Bamboo: soft and trim, but slower to dry.
  • Hemp: absorbs slowly but holds a lot for its thickness.
  • Cotton: a simple all-rounder.

Thick, multi-layer inserts can hold more than thin ones whatever the fibre, so compare the size and layers as well as the name. Many families mix materials. Compare them in cloth diaper insert materials and hemp vs bamboo inserts.

How many inserts do I need?

Multiply your changes per day by the days between washes, then add a cushion for drying time and extras for nights. One insert per daytime change is a common starting point. If it comes out soaked end to end, add a booster.

Some boosters and doublers use adhesive and are made for disposable diapers, so check the listing. Read how many cloth diaper inserts you need.

Questions shoppers ask

What is the difference between a booster and an insert?

An insert is the main absorbent layer of a cloth diaper. A booster is an add-on that raises absorbency and is generally not used alone. Check the size and thickness on the listing.

Can I flush cloth diaper liners?

It depends on the pack and your plumbing, so do not assume. Check the directions on the pack for how to dispose of used sheets, and use the garbage if flushing is not stated as suitable.

Which insert material dries fastest?

Microfibre usually dries sooner than bamboo or hemp. Plant fibres tend to take longer to dry, so a thick bamboo or hemp insert may need extra time on the rack or in the dryer.

How many inserts go in one diaper?

One insert per daytime change is a common starting point. If it regularly comes out soaked end to end, try a second insert or a slim booster. Start with what the diaper maker supplies.
