What size underpad do I need?

Underpads are sold by overall size in inches. Common uses:

  • 17 x 24 or 18 x 24 in: chair seats, or an extra layer on a larger pad.
  • 23 x 36 to 24 x 36 in: under the hips and upper thighs in bed.
  • 30 x 30 to 36 x 36 in: more coverage for people who move in bed.
  • 36 x 54 in and up: a large pad that covers more of the bed.

See underpad sizes explained before you order.

How absorbent should the pad be?

There is no single absorbency scale, because each maker uses its own words, such as light, moderate or heavy. Light pads suit occasional leaks. Moderate pads suit regular leaks. Heavy or overnight pads add material, size or both.

Thicker pads can be warmer and bulkier, so the heaviest option is not always best. Read underpad absorbency levels explained and check the product page for what the maker says.

Disposable or washable underpads?

Disposable pads need no laundry, and cases make restocking simple. Washable pads are reused, so they suit people who do not mind extra laundry. Many households use both: washable pads at home and disposable pads when travelling.

Questions shoppers ask

Which side of an underpad faces up?

The soft, absorbent side faces up toward the person, and the smooth waterproof backing faces down against the sheet. Check the pack if you are unsure, and turn a pad over before use if it is wrong way round.

What does case of 150 (15 packs of 10) mean?

The case holds 150 pads in total, packed as 15 bags of 10. The pack count is in the product title, so compare the total number of pads when you check the price.

Can I flush used underpads?

No. Used underpads, briefs and wipes can block pipes. Seal them in a bag and put them in the garbage unless your municipality tells you otherwise.

Can I use an underpad with a mattress protector?

Yes. A protector stays on the mattress as a barrier, and an absorbent underpad on top catches most of the liquid. Many households use both and swap only the pad.
