It looks like regular underwear, but the padded gusset has layers: a wicking layer next to the skin, an absorbent core, a waterproof barrier and an outer fabric. In some pairs the layers are sewn in. Others hold a separate insert you swap out.
Product pages say which design a pair uses, so confirm it before ordering. Our guide to how washable incontinence underwear works explains each layer.
Look for the printed absorbency in millilitres, such as 50, 80, 150 or 200 mL, and compare like with like. Makers define light and heavy in their own way, so a figure is more useful than a label.
Measure your waist and hips, then use the maker's chart. We have separate guides for men and women. To plan how many you need, see how many pairs of washable underwear.
Rinse soon after wearing, using cool water. Wash with a measured amount of detergent, and avoid fabric softener and dryer sheets, which can coat the fabric. Use bleach only if the label allows, and follow the label for drying, since heat can damage the waterproof layer.
If a pair starts to leak, check fit, laundry buildup and wear time first. See how to wash incontinence underwear and why washable underwear leaks. New or worsening leaks are a question for your doctor or nurse.
Multiply the pairs you wear each day by the days between washes, add pairs for wear while a batch dries, then add one spare. Our guide shows the arithmetic with examples.
Not necessarily. Makers define absorbency differently, so compare printed figures in millilitres. For heavy leaks and nights, disposable briefs or protective underwear may suit better. A pharmacist or nurse can advise.
Avoid it unless the care label says it is fine. Fabric softener and dryer sheets can coat the fabric and reduce absorbency. Always follow the label for temperature, drying and bleach.
It depends on how often you change, the price of a full set and your laundry costs. Work out your break-even point using prices on the product pages. Our cost-over-time guide gives a short worksheet.
