Cloth diapers suit a baby registry because the list can start small, change as you learn your baby's fit, and be split into gifts of every size. Ask for a short mixed set plus the extras people forget, not a full stash of one style.
Why cloth works well as a registry item
A cloth routine is built from separate parts: diapers or covers, absorbent layers, bags for used diapers and a few laundry items. That makes it easy to list in pieces, so one friend can give a single item while relatives chip in together for a bigger one.
It also leaves you room to adjust. Babies come in different shapes, and you will not know which style fits yours until you try. A registry that mixes styles lets you test before you commit to a large set.
Start with a small mixed set
Instead of twenty of the same diaper, list a few of two or three different styles. A pocket diaper, a cover with separate absorbent inners and a starter set all work a little differently, so together they show you what suits your baby and your routine.
- A starter set, which exists so you can try a style before buying more. One option is Esembly Try-It Kit Cloth Diaper Starter Set, Fantastic Fungi, Size 1.
- A bundle of inners and an outer, such as Esembly Cloth Diaper Bundle, 3 Inners and 1 Outer, Botanic Gardens, Size 1.
- One pack of pocket diapers with inserts from the cloth and reusable diapers collection.
Copy the size or weight range from the product page into the registry note. Where the title lists a range, such as Size 1 (7-17 lb) on one Esembly cover, include it. Gift givers cannot see your baby, so the range tells them they are choosing the right size.
Accessories people forget to list
The diapers are only part of the routine. These items are easy to overlook and are useful from the first week:
- Wet bags for used diapers at home and on outings. Voccos Waterproof Wet Dry Bags, Black and Grey, 2 Pack is one listed option.
- Disposable liners, thin sheets that sit inside a diaper to make solids easier to deal with.
- Fasteners or pins, only if you plan to use prefolds or flats, which are folded and then held in place.
- Detergent, once you have read the care instructions from your diaper maker.
- A diaper sprayer or splatter shield, if you plan to rinse solids into the toilet at home.

Small gifts, larger gifts and group gifts
Sorting the list by gift size makes it easier for people to act on. Here is one way to do it.
| Gift size | Ideas from your list | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Small | A wet bag, a roll of liners, a set of fasteners or pins | Easy to wrap, and useful whichever diaper style you choose |
| Medium | A starter set, or a bundle of inners and an outer | Lets you try a style in the first weeks |
| Large or group | A multi-pack of pocket diapers with a wet bag and liners added | Several people can share one bigger gift |

What to leave off until you know your baby's fit
Hold back on anything that depends on knowing your baby first.
- Bulk quantities of one style. If a style works, you can buy more later.
- Sizes far ahead of need. Sized diapers are labelled with weight ranges, so a larger size may sit in a drawer for a long while.
- Heavy-duty absorbency. Wait until you see how much your baby wets before listing extra boosters.
- Anything a caregiver cannot use. If a relative or daycare will be changing your baby, ask how comfortable they are with cloth before listing a large set.
Notes for gift givers
If you do not know the family's preferred style, you are not stuck.
- Buy from the registry when you can, and match the size or weight range exactly.
- With no registry to go on, choose an accessory such as a wet bag or a roll of liners. Diaper style and fit are personal, but any cloth routine needs somewhere to keep used diapers until laundry day.
- Pair a small gift with an offer of help, such as dropping off a meal in the first weeks. Laundry adds to the work of a new baby, and time is a welcome gift too.
- Sending a gift from abroad? We ship within Canada only, so use the family's Canadian delivery address.
Common questions
Can I list cloth diapers and disposables together?
Yes. Some families use both, for example disposables on trips while they learn cloth. Listing both gives you a backup and lets gift givers choose.
How many diapers should I ask for?
There is no single number, because it depends on how often you wash and how often your baby needs changing. Start with a small set, then add once you see which diapers you reach for. The pack count is on each product page.
Should I put detergent on the registry?
You can, but read your diaper maker's care instructions first, since they may name what to use or avoid. If the instructions are unclear, ask the maker.
Is a starter set enough on its own?
Check the product page for what it includes. A starter set is for testing a style, so you will likely want a wet bag and more diapers once you decide what works.
